The School District

The Storm Lake Community School District provides a tremendous opportunity for its next Superintendent. The future Superintendent of Schools will be afforded a unique opportunity to lead the most diverse school district in the state of Iowa in a community that features extensive educational and recreational opportunities.

The Storm Lake Community SSchools consist of 740 high school students in grades 9–12, a middle school, grades 5–8, with 674 students, an elementary building, grades K-4, with 896 children and an early childhood center, 4 year olds – Pre-K, with 208 children. The District also operates one of only three charter schools in the state with an enrollment of 59 students and is the only district that allows the high school students to maintain enrollment for a fifth year to earn credits towards an AA degree.

The District has been experiencing increasing enrollment, with a current student population of 2,577, that supports a wide variety of academic and extra/co-curricular activities. The Storm Lake Tornadoes athletic programs are members of the Lakes Conference, and the District enjoys a wonderful tradition in the Fine Arts programs with strong participation in all music and arts activities.

A distinguishing feature of the Storm Lake Community School District is the diversity present within the student body and is reflective of the wide variety of employment opportunities in the City of Storm Lake. The student body ethnic composition is as follows:
Hispanic 53.4%                  Asian 17.6%          White 16.3%          Black 5.6%
Pacific Islander 5.5%          2+ Races 1.5%       Other 0.1%

Over 1500 students (61.0%) are enrolled in the English Language Learner (ELL) program, and 24 language groups are represented in the District. The current free and reduced lunch count encompasses 71.5% of the student body.

In addition to maintaining a strong financial position, the District has excellent, well-maintained facilities, including the elementary school constructed in 2009, a $20 million dollar high school renovation/auditorium project completed in 2016 and a $1.1 million high school gym renovation completed in 2017. The Board recently approved the timeline for construction of a new early childhood facility with plans for a bond election in December, 2018.
